Interview With Northern Power Summit Creator D.O. Gibson

D.O. Gibson

The 4th Annual Northern Power Summit is a two-day urban music conference that is taking place from August 16th – 17th in Toronto at the Artscape Sandbox and Supermarket. Conference programming will include interactive conference discussions with music industry professionals and provide delegates with tangible music industry experiences and networking opportunities.

Northern Power Summit co-founder Duane D.O. Gibson is a Toronto based international hip-hop artist, as well as a successful record label executive and a socially active community ambassador. He’s sold tens of thousands of albums, hit #1 on U.S. College Hip-Hop Radio charts and travels the world performing for sold out crowds. Between recording his latest album “Second Home” and creating Northern Power Summit, Gibson founded the Stay Driven program where he tours schools to discuss relevant topics such as anti-bullying, peer pressure, and literacy based on his own experiences.

I had the pleasure of interviewing D.O. Gibson, where we spoke about the upcoming Northern Power Summit event and more.

DJ Sub-T: How did the Northern Power Summit start?

D.O. Gibson:  The idea for the summit came because we felt there was a lack of programming for the Urban community. I’ve had the chance to travel and attend conferences worldwide so I wanted to take some of the things that I enjoyed and implement them at Northern Power Summit. At the same time, we wanted to leave out things that we didn’t think worked at conferences.

DJS: What does the Northern Power Summit mean to you?

DOG: I think the conference is about empowerment. As an artist the ball is in your court. It’s up to you to create your movement. I want attendees to learn and I also want to see a sense of community so that we can build together.

DJS: In the 4 years that the event has taken place, how have you seen the summit’s progression?

DOG: It’s great seeing the growth. We wanted to take it step by step and build it up slowly over the years. Often times you see people bite off more than they can chew. We’re excited to move to a new venue and have more programming and people part of it. It’s really exciting.

DJS: What will people experience at the event?

DOG: Attendees get the straight unfiltered truth. One of the things I dislike about some conferences is hearing “You just gotta go for it,” or “it’s just about having good music.” While I agree in both of those points, I think it goes deeper than that. You want to get the specific tools and advice that can help you. We make a conscious choice of choosing speakers and panelists that will connect directly with attendees.

DJS: I’m a big fan of your most recent album “Second Home”. How has the response been from fans and those in the industry?

DOG: First off, thank you! Second, it’s been great. I recently had a contest to the song “Biggest Fan” and it was cool to see so many fans reach out. The ironic part is the song isn’t as much about me having fans, but rather it’s about supporting your friends that are artists. So, for me the Northern Power Summit and the music connect and come full circle.

DJS: What’s up next for you after the summit from a music perspective?

DOG: Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration… haha. It’s been fun connecting with so many artists that I want to continue to work with them. And then, I’m really excited to be playing Future Music Forum in Barcelona in September. That’s going to be a blast!

The Northern Power Summit is the perfect event for those in the music industry that want to learn more and take things to the next level. Make sure you come out and support this one of a kind event! Tickets are available at www.northernpowersummit.com.
